Get Out: Art & Wine Festival, Multiple Live Music Options and More

Last chance to see local and international art exhibitions

Patch has plenty of choices for you to pick from this weekend in Kent and in close proximity.

Right downtown the summer festival season begins Saturday with blocked-off streets and a focus on art and wine.

There's also the local Mother Daughter art exhibition closing at the North Water Street Gallery and the international M.C. Escher exhibition in its last days at the Akron Art Museum. 

Music options include five free acts at the wine and art festival, a Metal Fest, a Grammy-winning country band and an extremely popular touring band.

1. Kent Masterpieces on Main: Art & Wine Festival

Where/When: , corner of Main St. and Water St., downtown Kent.

Saturday, June 4, noon to 10 p.m.

Why Go: Event features 7 wineries, 30 local artists, local food and live music. The weather is expected to be great for the city's first big summer event. Water Street will be blocked off between Main St. and Columbus, next to Home Savings Plaza. Wineries include Barrel Run, , Maize Winery, The Winery at Wolf Creek, Candlelight Winery, Myrddin Winery and Troutman Vineyards. Live music includes Peggy & Brad, Colin John, Steve Vanderink, Rachel Wearsch & The Beatnik Playboys and Mahajibee Blues.  

Pricing: $10, includes commemorative wine glass and three samples. Free admission for non-wine drinkers.

2. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Where/When: Kent Stage, downtown Kent.

Saturday, June 4, 8 p.m.

Why Go: This multiple Grammy-winning country and roots band is celebrating its 45th year of making music. Originating in Southern California in 1966, they enjoy the honor of having their live recorded Circle LP specially placed in the United States Library of Congress. 

Pricing: $30 advance or $35 at the door.

Saturday, June 4, 7 p.m. 

Why Go: Some of the most popular local metal and hardcore bands of the last two decades reunite for an evening of ear-splitting sound and eye-popping sights. Bands include Hate Theory, NDE, Burn Blue Sky, RUE, Ethyl's Bong, Fully Consumed, THBBOTH, Mockingbird, Red Sky Mourning and Two Hundred Black Bear On The Horizon.

Pricing: $10 presale or $12 at door, add $2 for anyone under 21 years old.

4. Phish

Where/When: Blossom Music Center, 1145 W. Steels Corners Rd., Cuyahoga Falls.

Saturday, June 4, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: This Vermont jam band quartet has spent decades touring and building one of the most obsessive fan bases around. This modern Grateful Dead-like act mixes blues, country, prog rock, jazz and other genres to create a unique sound that has been stamped on 14 studio albums in 25 years. Get your tickets soon, their shows historically sell out.

5. A Mother Daughter Art Exhibition: Inherent Inspirations

Where/When: , 257 N. Water St., downtown Kent.

Saturday, June 4, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibition Closes

Why Go: use fiber and textile art, photograpy, paint and non-traditional materials to create their pieces and express themselves.

Pricing: Free and open to the public, but donations always appreciated.

6. M.C. Escher: Impossible Realities

Where/When: Akron Art Museum, 1 South High St., downtown Akron.

Open Daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibition closes Sunday, June 5.

Why Go: This international art exhibition on loan from the Herakleidon Museum in Greece features 130 works from the popular artist, M.C. Escher. He's known for creating many famous drawings featuring all sorts of optical illusions and mind bending designs, including the highly recognizable Drawing Hands. This exhibition has been so well received, it was extended past its original closing date.

Pricing: $7 general admission, $5 seniors and students, free for children 12 and under. Special Free admission Sunday for all visitors.

7. Cleveland Indians baseball game

Where/When: Progressive Field, 2401 Ontario St., downtown Cleveland.

Sunday, June 5, 1:05 p.m. Keybank Kids Fun Day - Kids 12 and under run bases.

Why Go: It's June and your Cleveland Indians still have the best record in the American League and one of the best in all of baseball. This weekend they host last years American League Champion Texas Rangers. Pick from two nights of fireworks on Friday and Saturday, and Keybank Kids Fun Day on Sunday, where kids 12 and under can run the bases after the game.
