WATCH: Silver Oaks Residents Travel to Cleveland for Mediation Over Eviction

A group of the remaining residents at the retirement complex hope for a resolution

The few remaining residents of traveled to downtown Cleveland this morning hopeful for some resolution to their forced eviction.

Noted civil rights attorney Avery Friedman, who has taken up the seniors' case, for the current owners of the retirement complex, Tell Real Estate Trust, and the prospective owner, Alabama-based Capstone Development Corp. The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is mediating the session.

Capstone signed an agreement with Tell to buy the property by Dec. 31, 2011.

About 20 seniors hopped on a bus to make the trip from the complex next door to the campus all the way to the Lausche State Office Building in downtown Cleveland this morning.

Not all who made the trip are current residents. Some, including Bob Parrish, moved out of the complex before the Oct. 1 deadline they were given in July. Parrish just moved out Tuesday to an apartment complex in his hometown of Stow, and he hopped on the bus for support of those still there.

"We just moved out yesterday, Tuesday," Parrish said. "It was tough."

It’s difficult to know just . Some people, including Capstone representatives, say just 12 are still living there. Residents say about 20 of them are left.

Arlyne Habeeb, director of community outreach services for the Portage County Community Action Council, said she’s sticking with an estimate that 40 or more people still remain.

Habeeb said some residents are just now about the forced eviction with the CAC.

“When I go in there I still see a lot of cars, and these seniors, if they have a car, don’t have more than one,” she said.

Tom Hudak is the only person left in his building, and he expects to stay there until Capstone forces him out — unless they reach some deal during today’s mediation.

Hudak, like some of the other remaining residents, is hopeful today’s mediation will get them an extension to continue living at the complex and a cash settlement.
