Sheriff Taking Donations for Hurricane Sandy Victims

"Cram the Cruiser" event is Saturday at Acme on East Main Street

Portage County Sheriff David Doak is reaching out to the generous Portage County community and asking for their financial support to aide the American Red Cross with their Hurricane Sandy releif efforts.

On Saturday, November 17, 2012, during the Sheriff’s Office annual Thanksgiviing “Cram the Cruiser” for charity event, at the Acme Fresh Market on E.Main St., Franklin Township, the Sheriff and his staff will also be accepting financial contributions for Hurricane relief. Those donations will then be sent to the American Red Cross.

Sheriff Doak indicated the Red Cross continues to focus on reaching as many people as possible who need help from Virginia to Rhode Island, with the majority need being in Greater New York and throughout New Jersey.

More than 5,900 Red Cross workers have been assigned to operations on the East Coast. They have provided more than 61,000 overnight shelter stays in more than 250 Red Cross shelters.

In addition, they have distributed or served more than 3.2 million meals and snacks, as well as distributed more than 121,000 relief items such as clean-up kits and hygeine kits.

The Red Cross and their workers are to be commended for their tireless efforts to provide assistiance and support to those who have lost so much.

But like other catostropic events, financial support is a vital part of the emergency response to get the supplies, meals, and water into the affected areas.

“It is difficult to appreciate the extent of the damage and the number of people affected. Help is urgently needed and financial donations make the greatest and most immediate impact. I am asking the Portage County community to stop by the Franklin Township, Acme Fresh Market, between 10am and 3pm, to make a donation to support relief efforts” Sheriff Doak said.
