Ohio resident Delores Dennison made personal history last Saturday when she attended her first-ever prom with the best date possible: her great-grandson.
When high school senior Austin Dennison found out that his 89-year-old great-grandmother, a.k.a. “Granny DD,” he decided to right this wrong and asked her to be his date to senior prom, according to the Times Bulletin.
The 19-year-old pulled out all the stops in giving Granny DD the time of her life, including buying her a pearl necklace, serenading her with a performance of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” and taking her to one of her favorite restaurants—Bob Evans—before the event.
“There was a standing ovation when we came out,” Austin told The Times Bulletin, describing the response that the student body gave Austin and Granny DD as they entered the dance together.
The Frank Sinatra song ‘I Love the Kisses of Delores’ played over the prom’s speakers as Austin and Granny DD took the dance floor. It was a song that Delores’ husband used to sing to her.
All’s well that ends at a reasonable hour, and Austin brought Granny DD home by 9 p.m. Delores told the Times Bulletin that such an hour was “later than I go to bed these days.”
