Dogs Outnumber Cats at Christ Episcopal Blessing

Christ Episcopal Church opens doors to animals for special, annual service

Dogs roared back from their 2011 defeat by the cats to win the attendance battle at the annual Blessing of the Animals at Christ Episcopal Church in Kent.

Eleven dogs joined three cats and a host of animal lovers for the 10 a.m. service on Sunday. The service of Holy Communion featured prayers by name for animals who have died, and animals who could not be present.

The church’s choir, headed by Music Director Edward Grimes, lauded the weasel family in Mark Schweizer’s The Weasel Cantata: A Musical Study of the Dietary Laws of Leviticus. The service was followed by a reception in the parish hall where the animals were individually blessed by The Rev. Julie Fisher.
