Board of Elections Seeks Poll Workers for General Election

RAVENNA, OH The Portage County Board of Elections is seeking energetic, civically-minded area residents to serve their community by becoming poll workers.

With the November 5, 2013 General Election fast approaching, the need for poll workers is high, Director Faith Lyon said. “Staffing the county’s 62 polling locations requires around 600 volunteers for each major election,” she explained. “We have a good group of dedicated workers, but we can always use more.”  Added Deputy Director Brad Cromes, “Poll workers are the heart and soul of what we do – they’re the face of an election, and set the tone for how voters perceive our democracy.”

To become a poll worker, applicants must be registered to vote in Portage County, have no felony convictions, and read and speak English clearly.  Duties include setting up the polling location, answering voter’s questions about the process, and assisting with voting equipment.  “If you can work a bank ATM, you can assist with the voting machines,” Lyon said.

Poll workers are paid $120 for their work on election day and $20 for attending two hour training, available on nights and weekends.  Workers who return election supplies to the Board office on election night receive an additional $5.

To apply to become a poll worker, residents can visit the Board’s website at http://www.co.portage.oh.us/election and download an application or call the office directly at 330-297-3511.  The deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
