Board of Elections Offers Summer Internship Program

The Portage County Board of Elections is looking for two energetic, politically active and civically minded individuals to join our team as summer election administration interns.

 

Those selected will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of county-level election administration in a bipartisan fashion, develop valuable research and communication skills, and assist the Board in building and executing effective community outreach and voter education strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build a high school poll worker recruitment and retention program;
  • Conduct community outreach and voter education, emphasizing voter registration processes and voter identification requirements;
  • Participate in planning and execution of elections, including logic and accuracy testing of voting machines and election night processes;
  • Explore social media strategies, including identifying exemplars from other local government entities and providing recommendations for the development of the Board’s social media presence;
  • Assess county polling locations for ease of use and compliance with law;
  • Identify best practices in emergency preparedness and office management;
  • Research full histories for elected officials in Portage County, including names, terms of office, and (if possible) electoral results and candidates for races, using archives of the Board of Elections and Portage County Historical Society; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Junior- and senior-level college students with an interest in government and public sector management and a 2.75 GPA or higher are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants must be registered to vote and active members of their political party.
  • Key skills include strong written and verbal communication, proficiency with MSOffice and social media tools, understanding of research and data analysis techniques, and an ability to manage time effectively and work in both team- and self-driven capacities.
  • Portage County residents preferred.

 

SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION:

  • Intern scheduling will be project based and flexible, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for 12 weeks, June – August 2014.
  • $8.50 per hour.
