Kent Roosevelt Lacrosse Beats Jackson Purple Polar Bears 8-7; Now Ranked Top 10 in Ohio

Rough Riders win second thrilling game in a row. Please support the team in it's mulch fundraiser.

Kent Roosevelt (6-0) and Jackson (4-2) traded goals back and forth all night Wednesday, but the Rough Riders were on top when the final buzzer sounded.

Kent won the game despite being out shot 27-29, winning only 4 of 14 face-offs, and failing to score on a 3-minute non-releasable illegal stick penalty by Jackson. Stats are always important, but having more heart is sometimes much more important in the outcome of a game.

The Rough Riders continued their streak of being hot in the third quarter, outscoring Jackson 4-2. The team has a never-quit attitude, and this was never more apparent. With only 3 seconds left in the quarter, senior Bobby Danner passed the ball nearly half the length of the field to find fellow senior Pat Valerius (2 goals) open enough to get a last second shot off and score. Jackson completely gave up on the play and it turned out to be just the emotional lift the Riders needed.

Although senior Troy Haren (3 goals, 2 assists, 7 ground balls) scored with 1:45 left in the game to put Kent up by 2 goals, Jackson was able to find the net a minute later. The defense of James Breiding, Eli Kepner, Drew Bowman, Michael Ruller and goalie Tyler Gallagher (9 saves) was able to hold off last second shot attempts by the Purple Polar Bears.

Other key goals were scored by Kyle Manning, James Strange and Tommy Fisher. Kent, with a record of 6-0, is now ranked 9th out of 120 Ohio lacrosse teams. They host Mentor at Stanton Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
