DESCRIPTION:The traveling banner exhibit\, Binding Wounds\, Pushing Bound
 aries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine\, will be featured at Nor
 theast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) from Oct. 22 to Nov. 30\, 2012. 
 The University will also featuring a special presentation from Frederick
  P. Marquinez\, M.D. ('85)\, of the Kent Civil War Society. Both are ope
 n to the public.\nBinding Wounds\, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans
  in Civil War Medicine looks at the men and women who served as surgeons
  and nurses during the American Civil War and how their service as medic
 al providers challenged the prescribed notions of race and gender pushin
 g the boundaries of the role of African Americans in America. Many histo
 ries have been written about medical care during the Civil War\, but the
  participation and contributions of African Americans as nurses\, surgeo
 ns and hospital workers has often been overlooked. Through historical im
 ages and period documents the exhibit reveals the life and experiences o
 f surgeons like Alexander T. Augusta and Anderson R. Abbott\, and nurses
  like Susie King Taylor and Ann Stokes as they provided medical care to 
 soldiers and civilians while participating in the fight for freedom.\nHo
 used in the Oliver Ocasek Regional Medical Information Center (Library) 
 at NEOMED\, the exhibit will be open to the public Monday through Friday
  from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibit was developed and produced by t
 he National Library of Medicine\, National Institutes of Health\, with r
 esearch assistance from The Historical Society of Washington\, D.C.
