Downtown at Dusk

While walking back from a photo shoot at Ohio Music, I noticed that the flour mill was surrounded in the last vestiges of daylight, making an interesting contrast to the yellow cast on the mill from street lights.  I lamented not having my tripod with me, but decided to brace myself against a light pole and give it a shot (I know, terrible pun).

Ah, yes, the mill. The mysterious mill. As kids we would walk past it, hear the roar of the machinery, and wonder what exactly was going on in there. Back in the 40's I made a drawing of the tower from a second floor window of the old Central School. As I sit here looking at it I realize it's the only thing I have ever drawn that remotely resembles the subject!
I think your photo is absolutely wonderful. I will send it along to my brother and sister.
Thank you for posting it on Patch.

Thanks everyone, but I have to give Mother Nature credit here. I just happened to be there when the light was perfect. Chris, if I could draw a straight line, I could draw the mill too!

The lens as brush with Kent's skyline as the canvas. Fantastic.

Morning Brad, thank you for all of your talents in capturing images of the CIty of Kent...especially during this time of transition. I have always enjoyed seeing historical photos and noticed the lack of complete collections like the Trory photos at the KSU library. Thanks for sharing!

The Trory photos - what a treasure! Historic photos become more valuable every year as memories fade. Trory added a lot of visible history to Kent. Thanks Dan. Matt, I've seen many "photography as art" statements over the years, but have not seen that phrase before. Very appropriate description of how the camera functions, methinks.

I'm sure someone else thought of it before I did!
