Students at Kent State University were welcomed to downtown Kent Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, as part of the four-day "Welcome Weekend 2011" introduction to the university for new students.

Classes start Monday at Kent State University, so on Saturday students got a chance to see all that downtown Kent has to offer.

As part of the university's "Welcome Weekend," a four-day orientation program, students were shuttled from campus to downtown between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday.

The "Discover Downtown" trip, driven by Lolly the Trolley, dropped students off onto a closed Main Street where businesses lined the roadway with information booths.

Throughout the day, hundreds of students made the trip from campus to downtown.

The students are guests in our city--they should act like guests not crazed kids being away from home for the first time. Littering our town and throwing up where ever they please. I really hated to see them come back.

They are not guests. They are residents. They pay rent and utilities, buy groceries and contribute to the local community as much as anyone else. Without the students, Kent would be Ravenna.

Without the students, and the money they bring, Kent would not be much more. Who do you think visits many of the new shops and eateries in Acorn Alley? I do, as a "Townie", but I bet you do not Pat. You seem to be against any progress in this town.

I don't like the few that do cause trash and "throw up" in the streets, but they are a small group that give the rest a bad name. I work with, as do many in town, many students and they are here for 4-5 years working in town and paying taxes. They live here and consider this home. They pay for utilities and shop for groceries in our local stores. They visit our parks and some older folks even have kids in our day cares and elementary schools!

People that share attitudes such as yours would like to see Kent as it was in the 50's. Maybe you need to all move into a development in Ravenna or Brimfield.
