Unemployment Rate Increases in Portage County
And Portage County isn't the only one seeing an increase — all 88 counties saw a higher unemployment rate in January.
Out of 88 Ohio counties, Portage County lands at No. 66 for its unemployment rate in January.
In January 2013, the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent. In December Portage County was at 6.2 percent. In January 2012, the unemployment rate was 8.4 percent.
The highest unemployment rate is 15.3 percent in Pike County. Mercer County boasts the lowest figure at 5.3 percent, according to this chart.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the statistics on its website Tuesday.
According to the statistics, Portage County's figure is comparable to nearby counties:
- Summit: 8 percent
- Stark: 8.7 percent
- Geugua: 7.6 percent

I hear unemployment is up in Summit County too. But not to worry. The mayor, county exec and 18 others just went on a trip to China for economic development. Wonder who is footing the bill for that one? Let alone covering their salary for the two week trip.
