More than 1,200 people battled the wind and rain to raise money for the 2012 Relay for Life of Kent State University this weekend.

According to the group's website, 1,283 people and 69 teams raised a total of $61,526 for the Kent State effort.

The fundraising culminated with a 24-hour walk around the track at Kent State on Saturday.

The Relay for Life is an effort of the American Cancer Society that "helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease," according to the organization.

As a Kent State grad, this is the event we should champion and show interest in. While masses of students were fleeing tear gas after a day of drinking, people were celebrating hard work and tremendous effort for one of the most worthy causes we have. Relay is a terrific event and thank you to those who helped raise so much for cancer research.
