POLL: Best Choice for Former Funeral Home, Book Store

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for reader input on vacant commercial properties

Earlier this week we asked for your thoughts on what kind of business or organization would succeed in the former former funeral home on East Main Street across from Kent State University.

You responded in spades.

Below you'll find a poll crafted from your suggestions. Vote for your favorite choice.

Here's a little background on the property: the empty building at 1005 E. Main St. was formerly owned and operated by Wood Kortwright Funeral Home, which sold the property for $500,000 to DuBois in 2005, according to the Portage County Auditor.

DuBois operated the space as an extension of their book store briefly until the main location closed last summer.

The building has a little more than 6,000 finished square feet and stands on a lot that has a little more than 1 acre and is zoned commercial.

  • What would fit well in this former book store and funeral home building?

A Trader Joe's store would be fantastic, but I wonder if this site is big enough to support such a choice. If Trader Joe's were to come to Kent, I'd rather see them go in the old Tops Store on Water Street, which is a far bigger space for such a venue. Still, the idea for a Trader Joe's to come here does have a great deal of merit (please, Trader Joe's? Pretty please?). I'm just not sure that this space in particular would be big enough for it.

Excellent point!! I'd love to see something go where tops was. It has been empty for a quite awhile now.

Since it is right up the street from the new courthouse, it is an excellent place tor a community based correctional center/halfway house/drug rehab center. Students in the criminal justice studies program at the university could do internships there.

Absolutely NO to the halfway house! How come No where, from No one is there any reference for young kids/adults.....maybe a chuckie cheese or similar. There is nothing in this town but cafes, bars, tattoo parlors, pizza and gas! You have to go to every other city around here for the kids!

Erm. Your second sentence is a bit confusing, but I have a suggestion - Don't live in a college town if you want to raise your kids in suburbia; move to Stow. BTW, your suggestion of Chuck E Cheese is.... A PIZZA PARLOR! On your list of "undesirable" businesses.

A strip club...are you people crazy?? Way to stay classy! Right across from the University, great choice.

"right across from the university" is the perfect location as the students won't have far to walk for work! and i count at least 6 poles already flanking the front entrance of this building - easy choice.
