New Downtown Signs
The owners of Ramella's Pizzeria in downtown Kent recently updated the building's facade and awning. The Kent Architectural Review Board told the business it must make some changes to its signs.

The Kent Architectural Review Board approved facade and sign renovations at Ramella's Pizzeria on Erie Street.
The architecture board approved the changes to the pizza shop's exterior this week, but the board also stipulated the business must remove one of its window signs and its internally lit sign.
The overall sign plan must also go to the Kent Board of Zoning Appeals for variances related to size. That meeting is not yet scheduled.

the internally lit sign is fine, as is the window sign. i bet burbick offered to buy them a maroon sign with gilded-gold lettering... to better fit in with the "good taste" part of kent. this architectural review board is a worse blemish on this town than any window sign could ever be.

It will look awfully unbalanced to take off one of the window paint signs. If you had to reduce the number of iterations of the sign, which one would you loose? If I were the owner, I'd take off both current window paints and paint a pizza pie outline in the window in favor of keeping my internally lighted sign. I think it terribly unfair to ask the business to give up it's internally lighted sign...pizza buying is, by and large, an after dark activity.

If the architectural review board is upset at the reduncancy of signage at Ramella's, how did Panini's ever pass (i.e. Panini logo on EVERY single window...the signage on Panini's does look ridiculous)? I went to check out the store front(s) in person today. Ramella's has a clean, fresh urban/retro look. KUDOS to the little guy!

Hey doughnuts... At least Mr Burbank along with Mr Lefton and some city leaders have some good taste. And thanks to their foresight, our city is getting written up in places like the New York Times. I'm proud to say i live in Kent. I'm proud to take friends downtown. I Don't have a problem with the pizza sign, but there are a number of businesses in the city that could use a face lift. Those that prefer the rundown, dilapidated, look, try Warren Ohio. Home prices are cheap too.

Concerned neighbor: I think doughnuts' point is that Ramella's doesn't have that "transitional luxury" look of some of the other downtown rennovations (I always think of the gilded/forest green/burgundy style as "Home Interiors Decor" style. Middle class luxe!)

Doesn't a business have to file drawings with the city prior to erecting signage? Wouldn't that be the time and place to tell them their sign is not up to code. If that's not the case it should be. I'm only sayin.

It sounds like Ramella's just REPLACED what they had with new awnings and sign and the Architectural Board took that as an opportunity to review their signage.

the ARB is a joke, who do these people think they are? businesses should have the right to operate without interference from "people who pretend to have taste" you think all the new construction business signs are ok? they're all bland facsimiles of each other, no originality. BOOOORING

I've never been inside this building so I have no idea regarding the interior sign. Is it unsafe? Looking at the outside of the building I think it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Especially considering some of the eyesores around our city.

Good thing we have an architecture review board to prevent egregious offenders like Ramella's from victimizing us. God knows what would have resulted but for their action.
