Paving work is nearly finished on Erie Street between South Water and South DePeyster streets on Monday, July 30, 2012.

The long awaited reopening of Erie Street is just days away.

Kent Economic Development Director Dan Smith said the portion of Erie Street between South DePeyster and South Water streets could reopen as early as Aug. 15.

“I think the worst of the construction hassles are behind us,” he said.

The expected opening of a new 120-space parking lot downtown, however, has been delayed.

City officials expected the new parking lot, in the middle of the city's redevelopment block, would open to the public as early as today.

Kent City Engineer Jim Bowling said the opening of the new lot had to be delayed due to access issues and some final touches that need to be added to the lot.

Bowling said the lot likely won't open any earlier than Aug. 13.

The parking lot will primarily serve employees of AMETEK and the Davey Resource Group, but the lot will be open to the public on nights and weekends.
