Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., bishop of Youngstown, celebrates Mass in the Kent Student Center Ballroom at the Newman Center's 50th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012. The University Parish Newman Center, home of Catholic campus ministry at Kent State University, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special mass on campus recently.
The Newman Center got its start in January 1962 when The Rev. John J. Daum, then-Newman Club chaplain, celebrated the first Sunday liturgy.
The center is holding year-long activities to mark its 50th anniversary.
More than 225 families are registered parishioners, and the center is home to the Catholic Student Association, which is a Kent State student group dedicated to promoting worship, social justice, faith development and social activities.
