The University Parish Newman Center, home of Catholic campus ministry at Kent State University, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special mass on campus recently.

The Newman Center got its start in January 1962 when The Rev. John J. Daum, then-Newman Club chaplain, celebrated the first Sunday liturgy.

The center is holding year-long activities to mark its 50th anniversary.

More than 225 families are registered parishioners, and the center is home to the Catholic Student Association, which is a Kent State student group dedicated to promoting worship, social justice, faith development and social activities.
