Kent Police Capt. Paul Canfield has been serving as captain for the Kent Police Department for several weeks, but he officially took the oath of office Wednesday before Kent City Council.

Canfield was promoted April 23 following five years as a shift lieutenant and a little more than one year as the department's administrative lieutenant.

The department's newest captain organized and led the two Kent Citizens Police Academies and serves as a sniper with the Metro SWAT team. As captain, Canfield manages patrol operations, scheduling, patrol training, jail operations, K-9 operations and special events for the department.

Canfield was sworn in by Kent Safety Director William Lillich.
