Kent to Send off Golden Flashes Football Team
Rally on campus, flags downtown to cheer on team as they head to Detroit for MAC Championship game

The Kent community is preparing to send off the Kent State University Golden Flashes in style as the football team heads to Detroit this week for the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship game against Northern Illinois Friday.
The university is hosting a rally for the team on campus at the MACC starting at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The rally will feature Kent State head football coach Darrell Hazell and a few members of the team, who will speak to the crowd, before loading the buses and heading off to Detroit.
Doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the program, and fans can get their official Kent State postseason rally towels at entrances into the gym. At that time, fans can get an inside look at this historic season with the “One Team, One Destiny” video series, which will be playing on the video board. There also will be free coffee from Tree City Coffee.
Following the rally, which should last about 30 minutes, the buses are expected to travel through downtown Kent before hitting the highway to Detroit, Kent State spokesperson Emily Vincent said.
"The approximate time through downtown is 9:25-9:35 a.m.," Vincent said in an email. "The buses will come through downtown heading north on Water Street and then turning west on Main Street."
Downtown, AMETEK has replaced the eight international flags atop the firm's new building with Kent State flags to greet the team as they pass.
Matt French, vice president and general manager for Kent's division of AMETEK, said the flags will stay up through Friday's game.

Um, do these guys have finals/exams or how does this work? Had a basketball player in my class last semester,never came to class but on exam days and he would be the first to leave. Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but how much is this costing us in tuition?

Kent State is only allowed to receive so many scholarships under the NCAA rules I believe. Whats it to you if he only showed up on exam days, if he passed he passed, should not be any bother to you. Maybe they are really intelligent. I liked it when the athletes did not show up, student/teacher ratio was improved.
Go Kent State, lets see another W this week.

Donald,
Personally I think the tuition is very high at Kent for a state school. Students are struggling to pay that general fee(athletics)-some of us are working 40 hrs a week to finish our degree and don't have any free time for attending sporting events.
As for that class, you were allowed 2 excused days. After that each day you didn't attend, went down 1 letter grade. So of 32 classes, he came 4. Maybe the "jocks" don't have to follow the same academic satisfactory progress the rest of us do.
All I wanted to know is if our spring bills will go up for this game.

It really sounds like you're complaining about school tuition and using sports as a scapegoat. Talk to your president who takes home a hefty hefty bonus and salary. Tuition at Kent State is not bad considering it is actually a decent school.

I'm with donald on this one. Yeah it doesn't look good for a "jock" to not attend class but there are plenty of regular students that fail to attend too. Athletes just like all students must have a certain GPA to stay in college. They may lack motivation to earn a high GPA like you or I but that's their problem. Athletes are given scholarships to help put kent state on the map for their performance. These players have done that. We are now able to gain extra endorsements or other forms of revenue brought in through successful teams. That money will be put into the university and community. Athletes also have to attend mandatory study tables. If they can't stay in college they lose their scholarship. So you should really reconsider having an issue with "jocks" and blaming them for the increase in tuition.
