Kent Police Issue Failed in All But 3 Precincts

Take a look at the tallies for each precinct in Kent — did your section of town vote for or against the tax increase

Of Kent's 21 voting precincts just three voted in favor of passing Issue 11, a 0.25 percent income tax increase that would have paid to build a new police station.

The issue failed by less than 10 percent of the total votes cast, according to complete but unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections.

The three Kent precincts that voted in favor of the issue were 1-B, 6-B and 6-D. For an idea of location, here's where those three precincts cast their ballots:

Can you see on the map that the students were in favor of the tax increase. The Kent State students should NOT be able to vote on Kent Issues. They pass many issues and then they move on and the citizens are stuck with the expense.

Why! Do you think council passed and then pushed to have this issue on the ballot? It is common knowledge that when the city wants these issues passed they can count on KSU students to say yes.
I am for a new police station, and from the ground up, not repurposed. The police have waited years and years for a facility. They waited while the city built multiple firestations, and have always had to wait or share what they were housed in.
Tops was originally Clarkin's and was built in the late sixties on that site and has been Gold circle, Value King and Top's. The building is worn out.
The reason you don't hear about what will happen to prisoners if the issue fails is that they would be transfered to the county jail something Kentites have already paid for.
The Chiefs comments are valid as she represents the department, but votes in Akron.

John, the Tops building is a fairly new building. They tore down the old building that originally housed Clarkins and built new for Tops.

Are you kidding me Pat?! Why shouldn't students vote on the issues?! I am a student, live in the city, AND WORK A FULL TIME JOB! How am I not included then? You don't think other students help out with an income tax? Guess what...there are thousands of students working on campus...and guess what? They pay income taxes to the city! Quit being one of those citizens who blame everything on the students...maybe try to work together more and strive for the same goal of a better Kent?

@logan: were you a Kent resident BEFORE you were a KSU student? was Kent your permanent residence?

thanks.

@John: you say the police waited years and years.

Most everyone I talked to only heard about anything been so terribly wrong with the station was this summer. We aren't going to be "guilt-ed " into voting for another station.

Do we need one? sure we do. Do they go about it the wrong way? sure they did.

Residents are very very very suspicious at the timing of this.

KENTPATCH: thank you so much for printing this article.

Teresa
Kent's annual budget has carried replace old poluce station since I know of the early 90's into the new decade and as far as I know it is still on it. When the new courthouse was proposed it was suggested that Kent,Kent State and the Sherriffs office with a courthouse detail be housed in a facility attached or near the new courthouse but died with a lack of funds.
This by no means means I think we need to give a blank check to Kent council these are connected items that should have been reported in the media to help understand the issue better.

@Teresa K. I was not a Kent resident before I moved to Kent. I grew up in rural Northwest Ohio. I have had many opportunities to move to Cleveland, but I continue to choose Kent...why? Because of the small town feel with personable people and businesses. Had it not been for KSU, I never would have even been here. Many residents take students for granted...but they need to consider...what would the economy be like if the University never grew or moved to a different location? What if we were just a small regional campus instead of Main Campus? Oh and don't forget...those students that are oh so ridiculed...constantly volunteer time and money to charities in Kent. Not saying that is directly related to income tax, but consider everything students do instead of saying that they shouldn't take an active role in shaping and moving Kent in the right and successful direction.

I'm all for a new Kent police station. However, I'm not interested in paying for it for the rest of my life. If the city had put a sunset year on the income tax hike, I would have voted for it.

I agree 100%. Yes, I do believe Kent needs a new police stations, but I plan on being in this town until the day I die and do not think the Kent citizens should be taxed in perpetuity for this. They need to come up with a well-thought out plan on how exactly what they want, how much it will cost and then do research on other ways to pay for it besides just taxing the citizens.

Since when are residents only permitted to vote on issues only if they were born and bred in the city where they currently reside? What a lack of logic in some of these posts. Thousands of students are paying city income taxes because they not only study here but live here and work here. I can't imagine students are clamoring to raise taxes on themselves in most cases anyway. PS: Great points, Logan!

I am not going to lie, but I really enjoyed voting NO on this issue. I was not born in Kent. I am not a student BUT I am a resident and don't like being taxed more for something. Lets see Kent pd bring more to the table in 4 more years, but I will still vote No.

Maybe the kids felt safer with a 18m station. Lol. But really, how much does a permanent raise in tax really affect them.

Kent residents were ok with giving Obama another blank check for questionable federal programs paid for by the "rich", but didn't want to support its own police department with a measley .25 percent increase to their taxes. Sadly, I'm not surprised.

Sour grapes. Old news. He was re-elected. Somehow, America will survive. We survived 8 years Clinton, survived 8 years of Bush (where has he been these past few months?). We'll survive 8 years of Obama.

Look, Kent is not Flint Michigan the new violent crime capital of the US. KSU students should not get to vote on this issue but should be billed for the Police runs to campus. I think the figure was about 35% of Kent Police runs were to the campus. Why not tack on $100 to their tuition and they could pay for the new station. All in all Kent Cops have a pretty easy, lower stress job than most officers. I am taxed out so keep putting on the ballot and I will keep voting no.

No to any new taxes! Cut the budget to pay for the station. We pay enough taxes!

When it becomes more expensive to maintain than to replace, replace. I don't know that this is the case w/PD, but a blanket refusal to upgrade for any reason is foolish.
