Kent Man Dies after Motorcycle Crash

Kory J. Lafferty died Wednesday following Saturday crash in Rootstown

A Kent man has died following injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Saturday in Rootstown Township.

Kory J. Lafferty, 26, died Wednesday at Akron City Hospital following a crash on Tallmadge Road Saturday night, according to the Ravenna post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Lafferty was driving eastbound on Tallmadge Road just before 9 p.m. Saturday when the driver of a truck traveling westbound turned left into a residential driveway in front of Lafferty's motorcycle, according to the highway patrol.

Lafferty, who was not wearing a helmet, struck the right side of the truck and was ejected from his motorcycle. The crash remains under investigation.

This is the eighth traffic fatality in Portage County so far in 2012 and the third involving a motorcycle.

I would agree that my thoughts and prayers go out to Kory's family. In the mean time, maybe it's about time to make into law that Motorcyclists should be wearing helmets at all times, simply as a safety precaution like seatbelts. Again RIP Kory...

It seems as though requiring helmets is focusing on the rider and not the individual turning in front of the motorcyclist.

i agree with you barack.. people need to pay attention when their driving. stop blaming helmets already !!. put the cell phones down. stop riding with your little dog in your lap too. i drive for a living. and i see this all the time. if you want to play on your phone. or pet your dog. pull over and get off of the road!! and watch out for motorcycles..with the high price of fuel. there's going to be more bikes on the road every year. and let those who ride decide.. rip cory.

Barack - I completely agree with you. Not to put a specific cause, but I am wondering whether or not the driver of the truck had been drinking or not. I am not saying that helmets is the only issue with this situation, its just a personal oppinion of mine for all motorcyclists to adopt, and it has in some states. But again you are right in that the article is not just focused on that. I am anticipating more details about the tragic crash to come...

stop blaming not wearing a helmet !! there's no helmet on the market that gaurentees an impact of over 13 mph.i also ride and have been involved in motorcycle rights groups for years.. i drive a semi dump truck. and the idiots driving the cars are either texting or in too big of a hurry to drive safely. everyone thinks their the only person on the road that matters... put the cell phones down and pay attention already.!!!

My boyfriend was witness to a motorcycle accident last month, and he helped the poor guy until police got there. The motorcyclist was hit by an elderly woman driving through a red light. It just seems this is happening too much, and thankfully that man was wearing a helmet, this one, however was unfortunately not so lucky. I am so sorry for his family, and I hope they make it through this difficult time. My question is, though, why can't people seem to drive anymore? Does no one look before turning or pay attention to signs?

When we were 16, two of my male cousins were in car/motorcycle accidents. In their cases, helmets didn't make the difference between living and dying. A "turtle" suit and a trike (rather than a 2-wheeled cycle) are more protection from a fatal accident than a helmet. That said, I still cringe inside every time I see a rider without a helmet.

There has been a tragic spate of motorcycle deaths in our area this week: Tuesday: David Elliott, 29, of Akron, Justin Zickafoose, 26, of Canton; Wednesday, Kory Lafferty, 26, of Kent, and yesterday, Daniel Clouser, 27, of Copley. All were twenty-somethings with full lives ahead of them, and now their lives are over and they are going to the grave for eternity in the next few days. Four families will be wracked with sorrow saying goodbye to sons, brothers, uncles, and friends will grieve as well.

Motorcyclists: wear a helmet! It could spell the difference between life and death. Don't weave in and out of fast moving traffic, either. Motorists: watch for motorcyclists as you drive down the road and be aware of your surroundings. Your defensive driving may save a life of a cyclist who you would not see if you don't pay attention.

Very sorry for these young men, not wearing a helmet at least doubles your chance of serious injury or death.

Bad auto drivers are everywhere.....wear a helmet, maybe other protective clothing is a good idea also.

This goes beyond motorcycles. More and more people are pulling in front of oncoming traffic/pulling out into traffic, and not paying attention or assuming the person will stop.

WRONG! YOU are impeding the flow of traffic if you do not have the right of way, and you will be cited and held responsible for the accident you cause.

"Internet wars"?
What in the (expletive) are you rambling about?
If YOU even have a clue.

The point was, since you missed it, was that people cutting/pulling in front of someone goes beyond motorcycles -- it happens to everyone. A complete disregard of traffic laws/safety. We saw a great example of that yesterday when a woman completely ignored flashing red lights and gates down at a railroad crossing, and paid for it with her life.
Again, it goes back to the "oh, that person will stop!" mentality.

I was there....a witness. there was no cutting in front of the bike. The truck was mostly in the driveway when the bike came speeding over a hill and failed to steer around behind the truck The biker left a 200 foot brake skid which suggests he was at twice the speed limit of 45. Yet he torpedoed and totaled the box truck.. There were also "caution trucks entering highway" and intersection signs which suggest a slower speed. There must have been something wrong with the biker. We pray for him.

Bob you are very rite the skid mark was 188 feet long and with the speed limit 45 he could of stopped twice safely. The truck was a box truck loaded and the impact still picked it up and moved it over also injuring the driver with cuts and bruises. So lets try and figure just just how fast he was going and with it being on a hill with warning signs for on coming traffic to beware of entering traffic. Also you are very rite the skid mark is totally straight not one bit of trying to go around the back of the truck. Yes the truck is totaled as well and that is hard to imagine a motorcycle totaling a F-450 box truck after sliding 188ft. It is a shame some one lost there life but clearly more facts are needed as to why the motorcyclist was riding a brand new Harley 182 miles on it going the speed of sound there is no one who could of seen him coming where it happened as his speed would of been in a blink of a eye
