Groundbreaking for New Apartment Building Downtown is Friday

City, developer to break ground on 'Building C' to house 32 apartments and new restaurant Bricco

City officials will break ground Friday on the last, new building to be built downtown as part of the more than $100 million redevelopment well under way.

Building C, to stand at the southwest corner of the intersection of South DePeyster and Erie streets, will be home to 32 upscale apartments on the upper four floors with the 7,000-square-foot Bricco restaurant on the first floor.

The new building is being built via a partnership between the city and Cleveland developer Fairmount Properties, which also built the new AMETEK and Davey Tree buildings in the same downtown block.

The building represents an additional 42,000 square feet and $6.5 million investment, according to the city.

The groundbreaking will start at 11 a.m. at Bar 145. Here's the schedule of events:

  • 11 a.m. – Bar 145 (100 E. Erie St.) - Opening comments and remarks
  • 11:20 a.m. – “Building C” site – Phase overview and ground breaking
  • 11:30 a.m. – Tour of Kent State Hotel and visitors center (optional)
  • 12:00 p.m. – Reconvene at Bar 145 for lunch (optional)

The other two remaining redevelopment projects, the Kent Central Gateway Transit Center and Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center, are scheduled to open in March and June respectively.

Another ball dropped by city "planners". A perfect place for public parking, lost to a useless tenement structure,AND another cookie cutter chain food place. We go to Chapel Hill to eat. At least there is parking. Bummer for the independent people that are going to fail because of this giant cluster eff. Just sad. My husband thinks that an independent firm should have been brought on board at the beginning. You know, men and women with actual experience from a major metropolitan part of the country. A firm that would review the city's plans and tell them everywhere they are wrong, along with the ramifications of being arrogant with public money. Perhaps things would not be such an epic disaster down there.

Wow, one of the more off-base comments on Patch, and that is saying a lot. You would prefer a sea of asphalt parking lot over the nice building pictured above? You eat up at Chapel Hill, yet denigrate Bricco's as "another cookie cutter chain food place"? Bricco's has only 3 or 4 other restaurants. I'm not sure if that makes them a chain, but they serve quality food, their 'chain' is local, and they have a great reputation--which is why they are welcome in Kent.

In a few months, there will be a parking garage directly across the street from the restaurant, but I guess parking still won't be close enough for you. So please, keep driving up to Chapel Hill to eat at those non-cookie cutter, non-chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, O'Charley's, Brubakers, Applebees, etc. (I'm also assuming you're also one of those people who say they won't eat in downtown Kent if it costs them 50 cents to park in the parking garage, but have no problem spending $5-10 round-trip in gas money to drive to the city-planning mecca of Chapel Hill). good grief.

Too bad the city planners don't have the "expertise" of you and your husband.

Oh. My. Gawd.

Just shut up. You have NOT a clue what you're talking about. All of you crybabies throwing fits over free parking, rather than entities that generate INCOME for the city....which, I would like to remind the uneducated hissy fit-throwers like yourself -- only BENEFITS the residents of Kent. Nobody cares what your husband "thinks."

My wife and I are loving the new development and all the dining options. Its great to have the variety, and Bricco should be the icing on the cake. Finally a reason not to travel to Chapel Hill or North Canton!
