Enrolllment Now Open For Children's Theatre Playwriting Workshop
"Active imagination" is the only prerequisite for children ages 6-17 who want to learn how to write and stage a play.
Standing Rock Cultural Arts is now enrolling students ages 6-17 for its New World Children's Theatre Playwriting Workshop, whose first session will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 12 at the North Water Street Gallery.
Jeff Ingram, New World Children’s Theatre director, said the workshop will culminate in three performances to be staged between May 17-29 at the African Community Theatre, located in Oscar Ritchie Hall at Kent State University.
The workshop group will meet twice weekly to write a play. Ingram said the sessions will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, although there will be some schedule flexibility. Once the play is written the group will meet three times weekly to rehearse and create sets for the play.
In addition to an emphasis on original playwriting, the company is dedicated to using recycled materials in the construction of its sets and props. This fosters an understanding of a sustainable planet as well as an understanding of how to work with limited resources.
The maximum number of students accepted for the workshop is 10 and the only requirement is for enrolles to have “an active imagination,” Ingram said. Cost is $200 per student, but Ingram said arrangements can be made for low-income families.

The New World Children’s Theater began as The New World Puppet Theater at the North Water Street Gallery in January 1993. Originally it was comprised of home-school children, but throughout the years it grew to include public-school students as well.
Eventually the troupe outgrew the puppets and the ensemble became The New World Children’s Theater, which has produced 27 plays since 1994. Click this link to see a chronological list of those plays.
Ingram said The New World Children’s Theatre is always looking for donations to support students from low-income families, as well as other ongoing activities. Donations are tax deductible and can be made to Standing Rock Cultural Arts, 257 N. Water St., Kent OH 44240.
