Kent City Council approved plans for a new marathon and half marathon race in Kent this spring.
The new "On My Own 2 Feet" marathon, set for April raises money for victims of domestic violence by supporting programs of the non-profit Family & Community Services.
The event will feature a full, 26.2-mile marathon and a half marathon of 13.1 miles. The races will start and finish at Beckwith Orchards.
Kent resident Melissa Cairns is organizing the event. Cairns originally sought approval from council in 2011 in order to start the charity marathons in 2012.
The majority of the race routes will follow The Portage Hike and Bike Trail.
The races will require some street closures, including the closing of the Fairchild Avenue Bridge, for the event on April 20. Council voted to approve the street closings this month.

I wish that I had known about this earlier. It is a little late to start training for an event at the end of April. According to the website, there was one last year as well. They should publicize more! I'm a runner from Kent, so you'd think I'd have heard of this if they had gotten the word out!

4 Months is definitely enough time to train for a half, especially if youre already a runner.
Lets hope the weather is better this year!

Jess, the race director is a single, full-time working mother. She tries to get the word out as much as she can, but her main focus is to donate all the money to the shelters, not to spend a bunch on advertising. You've got time to train for the half if you are still interested in running.

wouldn't there be more money to donate to the shelters if she made a greater effort to "get the word out" for a marathon that nobody i'm talking to has even heard about???

http://onmyowntwofeet.org/ is the link to the website. There is a link there to the registration site. We pushed for more social media publicity since it's mostly free. We have flyers floating around local businesses in Kent as well.

Four months is enough time to train for a half, true, but the half marathon registration raises less money than the full marathon registration, yeah? Also, I am already in training for another event, which running this race would interfere with-already committed and paid my registration. Running a race requires more planning on the runner's part than just training for it. I am not criticizing anyone personally, I am just saying that knowing a bit more in advance would have helped get more runners involved. I posted it to my facebook page, and none of my running friends (also from the area) had heard of it either. Maybe just something to think about for future races.
Also, the links to the registration from the website that are in the text "Event Registration Online for On My Own Two Feet Marathon and Half Marathon powered by Eventbrite" do not work. You need to click on the button that says "Find this event on eventbrite" to be taken to the right page.

I also want to say, I have very personal ties to the cause of this race, so I really do wish it all the success it could possibly have. Thank you to all of the organizers for working so hard. Is there information on race day volunteering? Water stations, that kind of thing?

Any chance there will ever be a 5k for us Couch 2 5k folks? I am already signed up for a 5k on 4/20 in Portage Lakes but I'd sure rather support and participate in this event. I would fully support this cause and would love to participate in an event in my hometown.

Jess, I would love to have your help. We are currently looking for more volunteers. I am a survivor of domestic violence and that is why I do this. I am overwhelmed by the support we have had and are getting. I want so much to have people use their pain to create something positive. Email me and we will connect about volunteering. Thank you so much. melissaanncairns@gmail.com
Bethany, at this point there is a walking option for the half, but no 5k in the making. You could always volunteer or donate, too. If you would like to donate, go to onmyowntwofeet.org and click on "register or donate now." You can donate any amount. Thanks!
