Update: No Car Involved in Bicyclist Wreck on Kent State Campus
Victim transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after crash
No car was involved when a bicyclist on the Kent State University campus crashed and was injured Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 3 p.m. on Midway Drive near the Centennial A residence hall. Initial reports indicated a car struck the cyclist.
But Michquel Penn, community resource officer for Kent State University Police, said in an e-mail today that there was no vehicle involved in the crash.
"Apparently, there was one riding by at the same time, which caused some confusion originally," Penn said.
The Kent Fire Department transported the male bicyclist to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna with minor injuries.
Kent Fire Lt. Dave Moore said he was in stable condition when transported. His name and condition was unavailable.

Everything is within walking distance if you have the time--so true! Too bad most drivers are so "short on time" they are multitasking on a phone call while they are mowing down bikes, pedestrians and citizens in wheelchairs!

Please remember, most cyclists are also drivers - and we ALL need to be alert on the roads. Drivers don't get behind the wheel thinking, "I'm going to go mow down some bicycles!" In an accident, obviously, the cyclist can be killed (I nearly was in '04) but the driver has to live with the accident, too.
Cyclists, PLEASE wear helmets, no matter how short or long your ride. It's like a seat belt for your head. You probably won't survive an accident without it.
Drivers, remember, Ohio law recognizes bicycles as VEHICLES, meaning they share the road as do cars, tractors, and other vehicles. That means ALL vehicles should maintain safe distances, obey traffic signals, pass with caution, and all those other laws you're supposed to learn in Driver's Ed.
Let's ALL be careful out there.

Why is it whenever something like this is reported it's "a bicyclist was struck by a car"? Sorry, that's not what happened. A motorist hit a cyclist. Cars don't act on their own, they are driven and controlled by people.

No car even hit anyone. Not to mention that most bicyclists think they dont have to obey any traffic laws while they are on the road. Most dont stop at stop signs, or red lights. Most use the road until they get to traffic and jump onto the sidewalks to go through red lights. If you are going to bicycle on the road and slow down all the other traffic, then im sorry you can be alittle inconvieneced by trafffic also. Bicycles have to obey traffic laws the same as a car does.

While on the subject of two wheel (motorcycles) vrs. four wheeel vehicles don't forget should a two wheeler go down regardless the reason and survives the fall if your tailgateing you may have just killed them. Granted we accept the fact there is inherant risk to our mode of transportation but we are not trying to commit vehicular suicide.

Bicycles are legally allowed, and in some cases required, to ride on roads, and both cyclists and motorists should be alert and follow proper traffic laws. I see plenty of cyclists riding against traffic, unsafely on sidewalks, or disregarding stops. Let's hope this wasn't the case. I advocate for more Bicycle Safety courses. Let's see that happen more. Let's also remember that a person on 20 pounds of bike versus a person IN 2000 pounds of car is reason enough to be more aware regardless of who is at fault.
