The Walker/Gfell family worked as a team last Sunday on the Haymaker Farmers' Market Mural. Pictured are dad, Greg Gfell, mom, Cheril Walker, and their twin sons, Ben Gfell, in the white shirt, and Noah Gfell. Walker said she's always wanted to paint a mural in Kent and "thought it would be a great idea for all of us to come down together and get a lot done."

Volunteers have been lining up to assist Kent artist Elaine Hullihen with painting a huge public mural on Franklin Avenue at the weekly "summer home" of Haymaker Farmers' Market. From left are Ella Medicus, Eli Gfell and Greg Gfell.

Elaine Hullihen, the Kent artist chosen to create the Haymaker Farmers' Market on Franklin Avenue, is custom-mixing many of the colors that appear on the huge public art piece.

Great progress has been made on the new mural at the site of Haymaker Farmers' Market in just two short weeks of painting, thanks to the small army of volunteers assisting Kent artist and Kent Patch columnist Elaine Hullihen.

Hullihen has been maintaining a list of names representing those who have volunteered their time to the project, whether in the concrete prep phases or painting phases. She's up to 32 names on that ever-growing list.

Some of the helpers are Hullihen's fellow artists and friends, some are Kent Community TimeBank members working for time credits and some are complete strangers who just happen upon the site and have time to spare.

The latter happened last Sunday, when a young man from Tallmadge who had just finished tubing on the Cuyahoga River walked by. He stopped and asked Hullihen if he could help, and she set him to work with a paint brush.

The huge public mural is coming to life on a shoestring budget comprised of a few corporate sponsors, cash donations from Kent service organizations and material donations from local businesses.

Those interested in helping to finance the mural can use PayPal's "Send Someone Money" feature and enter the farmers' market email address – haymakermarket@gmail.com – as the recipient.

Anyone interested in making a labor or material contribution to the mural project can email Hullihen at e.hullihen@gmail.com or Kelly Ferry, Haymaker market manager, at haymakermarket@gmail.com.
