Downtown Redevelopment
This aerial image from November 2010 shows the downtown redevelopment area prior to start of construction on many of the projects when the sites were just bare land. The old Record-Courier Kent office, near the bottom right corner of the photograph, had been demolished at this point. The former Car Parts Warehouse building, above the old newspaper office at the corner of Erie and South DePeyster streets, is still standing on the site where today PARTA's Kent Central Gateway transit center is nearly finished. This aerial image from December 2012 shows downtown Kent's redevelopment projects. Looking north, the new Davey Resource Group building is in the bottom left corner of the image. The new Kent State hotel is under construction at the bottom right corner. The PARTA transit center is above the hotel, and to the left of the transit center is Acorn Alley II, above which is Acorn Corner (aka the old Kent hotel) and the original Acorn Alley redevelopment. The construction site for the new Kent courthouse is visible at the top right corner of the photograph.
This aerial image from December 2011 was taken following demolition for much of the redevelopment block. At this point, only dirt was being moved at the construction sites for the new Kent State hotel, the transit center and the AMETEK building. Steel beams start to give shape to the Davey Tree building at the bottom left corner of the image.

This aerial image from January 2010 shows downtown Kent's redevelopment block prior to demolition of the buildings that were razed to make way for new construction. Still standing at this point are the old Kent Hardware building on South Water Street (in the center, left of the image) and The Bar'N building (in the center, right of the image), the former Kline and Kavali Plumbing & Heating building just north of the old bar and the former Jimmy John's location at the top right of the image.
This aerial image from December 2012, looking east, shows several of the finished redevelopment projects along with some still under construction. At the top left of the image is PARTA's massive Kent Central Gateway, to the right of which is the new Kent State hotel.
This image from December 2011, looking east, shows the Davey Tree building at the bottom center of the image is the only project under construction at this point. Acorn Alley II, however, is largely finished at the center, left of the image.

Downtown Kent's redevelopment during the past two years is astounding at ground level.

But the city's transformation is even more amazing when view from overhead.

These eight images, courtesy the city of Kent's economic development office, provide an aerial view of the downtown redevelopment starting in January 2010 and progressing to December 2012.
